Just got back from a week in St. Maarten. What an island! I am a huge fan. So far I’ve only been to Jamaica, Grand Cayman and St. Maarten so I don’t have much to compare, but St. Maarten out ranks the other two by far! I would most definitely go back.
What’s to love? The incredibly soft sandy beaches, the pristine water, the safety of the island, the ability to leave your resort for delicious cuisine on both the Dutch and French sides, super fun night life on the Dutch side, fabulous Snorkel/’Booze’ cruises, its close proximity to Anguila and St. Barth so you can island hop…so so much to love!
If you’re 20 something or below I recommend staying in Maho Bay, the Sonesta is a good pick. For those who can afford it, a villa in Long Bay is spectacular. Dawn beach is a little out of the way-far from the airport, night life, and pelican marina where many of the dive and snorkel trips take off from. I recommend the Dutch side over the French side. The whole island is about a 2 hour drive around. Cars rent for about $30 a day so wherever you stay you won’t be too far from something to do.
While I was vacationing I asked about other people’s favorite islands. Top picks were St. John for its safety and the ability to find secluded beach spots, Virgin Gorda in the British Isles for its overall beauty, and Costa Rica for its variety of beaches, volcanoes and mountains. Happy vacationing!
